The Houston Zoo March 2016
I have been part of the Katy Photography Meetup for about five years now. We occasionally do fun outings such as this group Houston Zoo trip where users can practice with their cameras, ask for help and meet other photographers from the Katy area. This Houston Zoo event was designated our beginners group, so I decided to use this time to assist others and also play with one of the lenses I do not normally use, a 1976 Reflex-Nikkor F/11 1000mm with manual focus and no image stabilization. It was a major pain and I fought with it all day!
This “Reflex-Nikkor” lens is known for… “donut bokeh”. To understand what this means, you need to know that “bokeh” is. Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Basically bokeh is the “pretty” blurry background behind a subject. The use of it is supposed to make the subject pop!
Sample of normal “pretty” bokeh that makes you focus on the subject.
Donut bokeh is also blurry, but blurry in a bad way. It creates circles (resemble donuts) that cause your attention to focus on it rather than the subject.
Here is an out of focus picture of nothing, but showing the donut bokeh. Your eye will focus on the circular donuts in the photo and will distract you from the main subject.
Here are three photos from the Zoo event that show this pretty well.
I do not recommend this lens to anyone other than if you want to challenge yourself.
Altogether, I was surprised to get this many keepers.
Thanks everyone who attended, it was a great time!
Dr. Viviana Coles owns a relationship Therapy business here in Houston. She is known
as the love Doctor and has a really cute license plate on her car! She needed a few marketing photos for her website. If you are ever in need of relationship therapy, please look her up! She was a very nice person!
Thanks again Viviana!
Lupe and Juan are getting married later this year.
We decided on a rural type landscape down in Pearland on their family’s property. We also tried to recreate the park setting that Juan used to pop the question. Good job Juan!
Time for an outfit change and lets bring in the horse! 🙂 You can’t tell, but the horse was being a little rambunctious… i had to Photoshop Lupe closer… She was a few more feet to the left in the next photo.
And one last outfit change. Did I mention Lupe is an officer here in Houston. You have the right to receive some flowers! 😛
I think Lupe just caught her man!
Thanks Lupe and Juan!
Here are a few photos from Macy’s at Memorial City Mall. The American Heart Association had an event for the public.
Here’s the HEB crew.
Our very own DJ for the event.
We had many volunteers helping spread the word about heart disease awareness.
Lifetime fitness was there giving out free stuff.
There were awards given too.
Memorial Hermann was there doing blood pressure readings and handing out goodies.
We had volunteers of all ages.
HEB had a long line at their booth – yummy and healthy free food samples!
Also Miss International 2015 was there allowing this lucky lady to wear her crown!
Thanks Lifetime Fitness!
And thanks to everyone who helped spread the message about heart disease awareness!
Marlene needed a headshot. Thanks Marlene!
Monica needed a few headshots. We were able to get a few good quick ones for her.
Myself, a few fellow photographers and a well dressed son decided we would run out to Brenham, TX looking for old barns and bluebonnets.
We made it past Chapel Hill without finding any barns or bluebonnets. After an hour of searching we decided to take a break at a community park, stretch our legs and pose.
Say Cheese Debi! Attitude Sandra!
And playtime Ziggy!
Ziggy enjoyed the break!
After the break we hopped back into the car and drove around back roads for another thirty minutes, finally ending up on a pretty hill overlooking a small valley. Ziggy didn’t want to walk out there without momma.
But once out there, he was fine. Don’t move Ziggy!! (snap snap!) Good job!
Alright, time to head on to the next spot!
As we were driving out, we found this fella trying to decide whether to sleep or eat.
And onward we went until we ended up in … Winkelman TX? Definitely a Ghost Town.
And finally we stopped for BBQ on the way home. By this time Ziggy was out cold. Too much excitement for him today! More BBQ for us! 🙂
Thanks Ladies and Thanks Ziggy!
